The best way to farm Ability Spheres is by unlocking Kottos at the Monster Arena, then using an Ability Distiller item in battle & defeating it.

It’ll drop around 40 Ability Spheres each time you do this.

Kottos is unlocked by capturing one of each monster on the Mi’ihen Highroad.

There are 8 in total that you’ll need to catch:

  • Mi’ihen Fang
  • Ipiria
  • Floating Eye
  • White Element
  • Raldo
  • Vouivre
  • Bomb
  • Dual Horn

Ability Distillers can be purchased from most shops, but the Monster Arena actually sells them so that’s probably the most convenient location.

Many other monsters across Spira drop Ability Spheres too. So you can farm just by fighting almost anywhere, but Kottos is the most reliable.

But if you’re looking to get some of these spheres early on, Dual Horns on the Mi’ihen Highroad are your best bet. They’re encountered frequently and have a better drop rate.

Uses For Ability Spheres

Their primary use is to activate ability nodes on the Sphere Grid.

Considering how many of those there are, you’ll need a fair few Ability Spheres throughout your travels.

But you can also use Ability Spheres to customize Sensor onto a weapon, which allows you to see enemy HP, strengths, and weaknesses.

Sensor requires x2 Ability Spheres to customize into a weapon slot.

Rikku can also use Ability Spheres to mix up some pretty powerful concoctions with her overdrive. Here’s a few to consider:

Frag Grenade (Ability Sphere + Ability Sphere): Deals minor damage and applies Armor Break to all enemies. Applies Armor Break with 100% accuracy.

Ultra Potion (Hi-Potion + Ability Sphere): Restores the party’s HP fully.

Megalixir (Al Bhed Potion + Ability Sphere): Completely restores party’s HP and MP.

Are These Worth Farming?

Ability Spheres are one of the most required spheres in the game.

Even if you don’t plan on completing the Sphere Grid or maxing your stats, you’re going to need a lot of Ability Spheres.

It’s totally worth taking a little time to get x99 of them (and it really doesn’t take that long with Kottos, only about ten minutes).

And since Ability Spheres are so easy to get, you can use them recklessly with Rikku’s mixes to make your life even easier. So go get those spheres!
