(Learn more).Allagan Tomestones are an in-game currency in Final Fantasy XIV, obtained by completing dungeons, trials, and raids. The main use of Tomestones is to purchase endgame gear from vendors across the world of Eorzea.
As you might expect from Final Fantasy, even this currency has interesting lore by itself.
The Tomestones are valuable chunks of data from an age long gone, and they’re highly sought after.
Allagan Tomestones will be handed out in varying amounts for completion of Duty Roulettes, trials, and dungeons. If you look them up, you’ll notice that they have a ton of different names – such as the Tomestone of Poetics, Lore, Mythology, and Phantasmagoria, to list a few.
The name relates to the tier of rewards you can purchase with them, and it’s not nearly as complicated as it might look.
Types Of Tomestones
As FFXIV has grown over time, Tomestones have been streamlined, with previous types becoming obsolete.
Allagan Tomestones of Poetics are the singular currency for rewards in A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood these days.
Tomestones of Allegory and Revelation are rewards for clearing Shadowbringers content, and they can be used to purchase high-end gear.
You can carry up to 2,000 of any type of Tomestone at any time, excluding the most recently released type, which will be capped at 450.
The Tomestones of Poetics would be used to buy valuable gear and crafting materials. If you’ve recently hit level 50, checking out one of the vendors is a great way to quickly upgrade your gear.
You’ll probably have quite a few Tomestones of Poetics just by advancing through the storyline and post-ARR content.
It’s also important to note that hitting level 50 isn’t enough by itself to gain access to the basic Tomestone vendors in the three core cities.
You’ll also have to clear the level 50 Main Scenario Quest “The Ultimate Weapon” to have them appear. This is basically the endgame for A Realm Reborn, and a dense chunk of content.
So depending on your individual playstyle, you might not be able to access them right away.
Poetics will continue to be useful as you progress, as an easy way to gear up alternative jobs once they’ve hit the right level.
Once you’ve hit the 2,000 cap on Tomestones, anything else you earn might be wasted – so it’s worth planning out which jobs you might like to level in future, and buying armor and weapons for them ahead of time.
Where Can I Spend Tomestones?
All major cities will have a vendor that accepts Tomestones.
You can identify them on the map by their telltale blue pouch icon.
Your first step as a new player should be to head to Rowena’s Representative in New Gridania, right next to the Aetheryte Plaza. There are counterparts in Limsa Lominsa and Ul’dah too.
Revenant’s Toll, Idyllshire, Ishgard, Kugane, and Eulmore all have their own vendors. So you can easily pick up gear upgrades as you progress throughout the expansions.
Moogle Treasure Trove Events
Introduced in the run-up to Shadowbringers, the Moogle Treasure Trove events have players collecting Irregular Tomestones, which can be traded with the Itinerant Moogle in Gridania for exclusive rewards.
When the Treasure Trove event is live, bring up your Duty Finder and examine the list.
Duties marked with a small Moogle icon will reward you with Irregular Tomestones, which can then be exchanged for a random selection of older items, plus a single new one thrown into the mix.
Treasure Trove events are usually available in the run-up to the latest patch.
What’s The tl;dr?
In short, you can use Allagan Tomestones of Poetics to significantly boost your gear after reaching milestones in FFXIV’s huge story.
Tomestones of Allegory and Revelation will provide you with powerful end-game equipment in exchange for clearing current content.
And as the game grows, older Tomestones will become obsolete, while new ones will take their place – but their practical purpose remains the same: helping you get new & better gear.
