Staff of Homa (SoH) and Primordial Jade Winged-Spear (PJWS) are among the strongest 5-star polearms in-game.

At Refinement Rank 1 Level 90, they have the following stats and passive:

Staff of Homa Primordial Jade Winged-Spear
Base ATK 608 674
Secondary Stat 66.2% CRIT damage 22.1% CRIT rate
Passive

Increases HP by 20%.

Provides an ATK bonus that’s equal to 0.8% of the user’s max HP. When the user’s HP is less than 50%, the ATK bonus is increased by an additional 1% of max HP.

On hit, increases ATK by 3.2% for 6s – a maximum of 7 stacks can be gained. This effect can be triggered once every 0.3s.

During max stacks, this increases damage dealt by 12%.

They’re both very versatile and work well on a lot of units. Still, Homa often outperforms PJWS – but not by a lot.

This is mainly because of Homa’s CRIT damage stat.

Although PJWS’ abundance of ATK is good, ATK is a very saturated stat.

It’s much easier to get from other sources (like artifacts and buffs) than CRIT, thus making Homa’s CRIT damage more valuable. But in most cases, they’re close to each other in performance.

If you already have one of them, there’s often no need to pull for the other – unless you’re playing Hu Tao.

Here’s a more detailed comparison of the two weapons for each DPS polearm user.

For Hu Tao

Staff of Homa is Hu Tao’s best weapon by far.

She greatly benefits from every aspect of the weapon – and PJWS is not a recommended alternative. This is because Hu Tao doesn’t benefit enough from PJWS’ ATK stats.

Even 4-star weapons (like Dragon’s Bane and Deathmatch) with refinements can outperform PJWS for Hu Tao.

If you don’t have Homa, it’s best to stick with Dragon’s Bane instead of PJWS.

You will naturally get refinements for Dragon’s Bane – and it simply outperforms PJWS with refinements.

For Raiden Shogun

Homa and PJWS perform very close to each other for Raiden.

Below 50% HP, Homa will outperform PJWS – but this is unlikely. Raiden is often paired with Bennett, so she’ll almost always be at above 50% HP.

Both of them are great options, so just use whichever you have available.

For Rosaria

For both freeze and reverse melt builds, Staff of Homa is Rosaria’s best weapon.

Although she can’t benefit from the >50%HP bonus, its stats are still very valuable – especially on a freeze build where she already gains a lot of CRIT rate from the 4pc Blizzard Strayer set.

PJWS is also a great option, but its passive can be wasted on Rosaria.

She doesn’t spend a lot of field time, so the stacks will rarely be gained. Plus, she can easily overcap on CRIT rate when in a Blizzard Strayer build.

Still, PJWS is a 5-star weapon with 5-star stats – it will outperform most 4-star options.

For Xiangling

Homa outperforms PJWS in every Xiangling team and build.

Since she’s very often paired with Bennett – a buffer that gives a lot of ATK buffs – PJWS’ ATK stats can easily become oversaturated. In contrast, Homa’s CRIT damage will always be rare and valuable.

Additionally, Xiangling often won’t benefit from PJWS’ passive.

Its stacking mechanic simply consumes too much field time, thus making it not worth using – so she misses out on its extra ATK and damage bonus.

Still, PJWS is a good weapon that works fine with Xiangling.

For Xiao

Homa and PJWS are very similar in performance for Xiao.

One can situationally be better than the other, but the difference isn’t significant.

Because of this, the better weapon will often depend on your artifacts and team comp. Here’s a list of scenarios when one can outperform the other.

Staff of Homa Primordial Jade Winged-Spear
  • If you need more CRIT damage.
  • If you’re not running a healer – this makes it much easier to stay under 50% HP.
  • Speedruns or finishing content within one rotation.
  • Solo Xiao – not practical, but it looks great for showcases.
  • If you need more ATK or CRIT rate.
  • If you’re using Bennett. He heals too quickly, thus making it hard to stay under 50%HP with Homa.
  • If you’re using a healer – most healers can easily overheal Xiao past 50%.

Alternatively, just use whichever weapon you have available. They’re both Xiao’s strongest weapon options – so either will work great.

For Zhongli

Staff of Homa is Zhongli’s general best-in-slot weapon for DPS builds.

He benefits from all of its stats – namely, ATK, HP, and CRIT damage. So, even in a shield-bot build, Homa is just better than PJWS.

PJWS is still a good option for DPS builds, but it can be outperformed by 4-star weapons.

For instance, Deathmatch and The Catch can outperform PJWS in a Burst DPS build. And Crescent Pike outperforms PJWS in a Physical DPS build.
