How To Obtain Charcoal in OSRS

If you’re an ironman or want to source it yourself, the fastest way to get charcoal is buying it in the Karamja General Store, south of Brimhaven.
Or if you don’t want to spend any money, you can cut the burnt trees in the Fishing Hamlet to get charcoal (these are located east of the Wintertodt).
Charcoal is a requirement in a lot of quests (you’ll need between 8 and 9 for all of them). Thankfully you can get it quickly just by buying it, or you have options to source it through natural resources, or even get some from the Dig Site activities.
Buying Charcoal (Best Locations)
Charcoal is a very cheap item, so you can buy it in the Grand Exchange for around 200 coins (as of this writing).
However, if you’re an Ironman and can’t use the GE, or if you want to get your charcoal from one of the General Stores, here’s a list of places you can go (each map has a yellow circle indicating where the store is located):
Shilo Village
Karamja (North of Tai Bwo Wannai)
Keldagrim (West part of the city)
Getting Charcoal Yourself
You can source charcoal by cutting a Burnt tree.
These can be found in the following places, ranked below in order of easiest location to least convenient location:
- Fishing Hamlet (east of Wintertodt)
- South of the Demonic Ruins (In the wilderness, so be careful!)
- Fossil Island Volcano
- Death Altar
And during the Dig Site Quest you’ll unlock two activities that can give you charcoal:
Digging Soil (Digsite)
Use a Trowel on the training site while wearing Leather boots and gloves.
If you lost your trowel then you can get another one by talking to one of the Examiners.
And you can get boots and gloves by pickpocketing Digsite workmen hanging around.
Searching the Specimen Tray (Digsite)
Just search the tray by using a Specimen jar and Specimen brush. The tray can be found located south of the training sites.
You can get the brush from pickpocketing the workman, and you can get the jar by searching the sacks around the Digsite.
Charcoal Uses in OSRS
The only use for charcoal in OSRS (as of this writing) is as a requirement for some quests.
You’ll need between 8 and 9 pieces of charcoal to complete all of them.
Here’s a list of all the current quests that require charcoal:
- Darkness of Hallowvale
- Desert Treasure
- The Dig Site
- Goblin Generals part of Recipe for Disaster
- Shilo Village
- Zogre Flesh Eaters
- Fairy Tale part I (possibly, because you’ll need 3 randomized items here, one of which is charcoal)
