Where To Get a DeepSeaScale in Pokémon HG/SS

The hidden DeepSeaScale location in Pokémon HeartGold

One Deep Sea Scale can be found as a hidden item using a Dowsing Machine in Kanto’s Route 20, although you can technically get the item without the machine. This is the only overworld-accessible Deep Sea Scale in the game.

If you need more, then you can actually farm Deep Sea Scales by catching (or stealing from) a Lanturn, Chinchou, or Relicanth. All of these Pokémon have a 5% chance to be holding a Deep Sea Scale in the wild.

Let’s have a look at these two methods below.

Method 1: Hidden Item on Route 20 (Step-by-Step)

If you’d like to fetch yourself the default hidden Deep Sea Scale in HeartGold/SoulSilver, you’ll need to first have Kanto unlocked.

Then go to Fuchsia City and find the route connector building located below the Pokémon Center.

Step 1: Through this building you’ll find a short sandy trail, which leads to the sea of Route 20.

Step 2: Surf on the water and swim leftwards on the sea.

Step 3: Continue surfing left, but stay up against the rocks and keep going past the trainers.

Eventually you’ll stumble upon an island with 2 entrances to the Seafoam Islands.

Step 4: Continue to swim to the left past this island with the caves, and you’ll find the end of the rock trail (you’ll be barricaded off from continuing).

This section of the ocean has what you’re looking for.

Step 5: Use your Dowsing Machine or reference the screenshot below to position yourself at the hidden item’s spot, and then collect your Deep Sea Scale.

Method 2: Stealing Held Items

The only other way to fetch a Deep Sea Scale in HG & SS is by finding any of the few wild Pokémon that might be holding it, and then pocketing the item for yourself.

Lanturn and Chinchou have a 5% chance of holding a Deep Sea Scale in both games, so these two are your best choices.

Relicanth can also have a scale, but this can only be caught during a swarm on Route 12. So it’s a little rarer.

You can catch Lanturn and Chinchou at a variety of locations, but you can easily find them if you fish using a Super Rod in the water along Route 20.

So you can catch these Pokémon (or steal from them) in basically the same location as the hidden Deep Sea Scale. Convenient!

Note: Stealing from wild Pokémon is the only method that you can repeat infinitely. So if you’re looking to farm these scales for whatever reason, then this second method is your only option.
