Where To Get Level Balls & Red Apricorns (Pokémon HGSS)

Red Apricorn Tree in Fuschia City (HGSS)

Kurt in Azalea Town can turn any Red Apricorns you harvest into Level Balls, which have a catch rate that increases depending on how much higher level your current Pokémon is than the wild Pokémon.

Red Apricorns in HeartGold/SoulSilver can be found:

  • Growing on apricorn trees on Route 37, Route 44, and in Fuchsia City.
  • On sale for 200 points at the Pokéathlon Dome on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Below we’ll show you exactly where to find each Red Apricorn tree, how to turn them into Level Balls, and the mechanics of how these special Pokéballs work.

How To Get Level Balls

You can make your own Level Balls once you’ve earned your third gym badge and removed the Sudowoodo blocking your path on Route 36.

The first Red Apricorn tree is just north of Sudowoodo, on Route 37.

Once you’ve picked one, you can bring it to Kurt in his house in the top left corner of Azalea Town to turn it into a Level Ball. The process will take a day, and he’ll give you a call on your Pokégear when he’s finished.

Note: Kurt can only create one type of Pokéball at a time. However, you can give him multiple Apricorns of the same color at once.

If you rushed through the beginning stages of the game without doing much exploring, you may have missed the Apricorn Box. This will leave you unable to pick Apricorns.

To get it, return to the house just north of Cherrygrove City, on Route 30.

Red Apricorn Trees (All Locations)

Below we’ll show you the exact location of each of the three Red Apricorn trees.

Apricorns only take a day to re-grow once you pick them, so remember to return tomorrow if you need more.

Route 37

The first Red Apricorn tree in the game is most easily reached from Ecruteak City’s south exit.

At the point shown above, simply walk to the right and jump down over the ledge.

There are a few Apricorn trees here, a red one amongst them.

Route 44

This next Red Apricorn is just as easy to find.

All you need to do is leave Mahogany Town through the east gate. To do this, you must have first defeated the Team Rocket Executives in Goldenrod City.

You’ll see the tree almost as soon as you emerge onto Route 44.

Fuchsia City

The third and final Red Apricorn tree is just as simple to locate.

The only catch is that it is located deep in Kanto, so you’ll need to be pretty far through the game. You’ll also need to bring a Pokémon with Cut to access it.

Once you’ve flown to Fuchsia City, walk a few steps north of the Pokémon Center.

You’ll see a Cut-able tree. Chop it down and your Red Apricorn tree awaits in the enclosure just beyond.

Alternate Method: Winning Apricorns at the Pokéathlon Dome

If you’re a big fan of the Pokéathlon Dome minigames, you can spend your winnings on Apricorns.

If you don’t find the events fun though, it’s probably quicker to just pick the Red Apricorns by hand, considering their easy locations.

The Pokéathlon Dome is located at the top of Route 35 and shares an entrance with the National Park.

Red Apricorns are on sale at the Athlete Shop here for 200 points each on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. The shop is inside in the top right corner.

Level Ball Mechanics

Level Balls are more effective when your active Pokémon is levelled higher than the wild Pokémon you want to catch.

The catch modifiers are as follows:

Level Ball Catch Rates
Catch Multiplier Your Pokémon’s Level
x1 Equal to or lower than the wild Pokémon
x2 Higher level (but less than double the wild Pokémon’s level)
x4 Higher level (2x+ the wild Pokémon’s level)
x8 4x+ leveled higher than the wild Pokémon

For reference, the catch multiplier for an Ultra Ball is x2.
