Where To Get Moon Balls & Yellow Apricorns (Pokémon HGSS)

Yellow Apricorn Tree near Violet City (Pokémon HGSS)

Using the expertise of Kurt in Azalea Town, you can turn Yellow Apricorns into Moon Balls, which have an increased catch rate on any Pokémon that evolves using a Moon Stone.

In HeartGold & SoulSilver, you can only collect Yellow Apricorns with the following methods:

  • Pick them from special trees in Violet City, and on Route 42, Route 46, and Route 8
  • Buy them for 200 points at the Pokéathlon Dome on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Below you can find details on how exactly Moon Balls work, how to make them, plus a comprehensive step-by-step location guide for every Yellow Apricorn tree.

How To Get Moon Balls

You can get a Moon Ball of your own as soon as you’ve cleared Team Rocket out of Slowpoke Well in Azalea Town.

After this point, Kurt will offer to turn any Apricorns you find into special Pokéballs. His house is in the top left corner of town.

It will take a day for him to fashion your Apricorns into Pokéballs, and he’ll call your Pokégear when he’s done.

He can only create one type of ball at a time, but you can give him multiple of the same color of Apricorns at once.

If you ran through the beginning of the game without exploring or talking to people, it’s possible you missed the Apricorn Box and can’t carry any of your own.

The man who gives you the Apricorn Box lives on Route 30, located just above Cherrygrove City’s north exit.

The tree outside his house also handily shows you what an Apricorn tree looks like.

All Yellow Apricorn Tree Locations

In the following sections, we’ll show you where to find each of the four Yellow Apricorn trees.

Harvested Apricorns only take a day to re-grow, so you can revisit each tree daily.

Violet City

Violet City’s Yellow Apricorn tree lies just outside the south exit, just before Route 32 begins.

Just walk a few paces further south from the point pictured above and you’ll find your tree.

Route 42

The Yellow Apricorn tree on Route 42 is similarly simple to reach.

However, you will need Pokémon with Surf and Cut in your party to get to it.

Start by leaving Ecruteak City through the east gate and carry on walking east until you hit the water.

Surf directly east over this water until you hit dry land.

There you should see a Cut-able tree. Chop it down and – voila! – there’s your Yellow Apricorn. This one even has friends.

Route 46

The Yellow Apricorn tree on Route 46 is a bit more of a slog to reach.

Start by leaving Blackthorn City through the south exit.

From there, head straight down south until you reach the bridge leading westward, pictured below.

Head further west until you pass the entrance to Dark Cave.

Now you begin the long walk down south.

If you’ve not been this way before, there will be trainers to battle and items to collect. Even if you have, there’s long grass, so expect wild Pokémon.

Keep going down, jumping over ledges and remaining in a straight line until you reach the point pictured below.

Now walk down those steps to your left and keep heading west past another entrance to Dark Cave.

Follow that passageway walking west and you’ll quickly find the Yellow Apricorn tree.

Route 8

The last Yellow Apricorn tree is much further along in the game, deep within Kanto.

It’s best approached from Saffron City’s east gate. You’ll emerge into the area below.

Alternate Method: Winning Apricorns At The Pokéathlon Dome

If you love the Pokéathlon Dome minigames, you can spend some of your winnings on various colors of Apricorn.

If you’re not well acquainted with the Pokéathlon events though, you can easily pick more Yellow Apricorns in the wild than you’ll ever need in a couple of days.

The Pokéathlon Dome is found at the top of Route 35, sharing an entrance with the National Park.

You’ll find Yellow Apricorns for sale here for 200 points each on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The Athlete Shop sells them and is found in the top right corner of the interior.

Moon Ball Mechanics

You can try to catch any Pokémon in a Moon Ball.

However, they are only more effective on Pokémon who rely on the Moon Stone to evolve. That would include:

  • Clefairy
  • Jigglypuff
  • Nidorina
  • Nidorino

So Moon Balls have a pretty limited specialty.

Nonetheless, Moon Balls are much more effective at catching these Pokémon, providing a x4 multiplier over regular Pokéballs. That’s compared to the x2 multiplier of an Ultra Ball.
