Griffins are majestic monsters that can be tamed and ridden in Rune Factory 5.

There are 5 monsters in the Griffin family:

  • Griffin
  • Ice Griffin
  • Flame Griffin
  • Hippogriff
  • Killer Griffin

What you’ll need to tame any kind of Griffin is:

  • Bird’s Feather or Strong Talon
  • Enough space in your Monster Barns

Fortunately, like most non-boss monsters, Griffins drop their favorite taming items.

Each type of Griffin has their own unique color palette that you can see in the following images.

Griffin-type Monsters Locations

Regular Griffins are the most widespread among their family, and can be found at these 3 different locations:

  • Phoros Woodlands
  • Lake Yumina
  • Belpha Ruins: Depths

There are 2 good locations with a Gate that spawns only Griffins.

The first location is at Belpha Ruins: Depths B4 where only a single Griffin spawns each time.

The second location is in the Northern area of Phoros Woodlands where multiple Griffins spawn.

2. Ice Griffin

Ice Griffins are one of the first types of Griffins that you can encounter.

They can be found at:

  • Lake Yumina
  • Meline Crystal Caverns – Depths

If you look at the map below, you’ll see 2 recommended locations for Ice Griffins.

The area circled in red has a solitary Ice Griffin that is only at level 17. This would be a great monster companion that you can tame early in the game.

Otherwise, the area circled in blue has multiple Ice Griffins at level 45.

3. Flame Griffin

Flame Griffins can be found around mid-game after you’ve unlocked the Depths of Kelve Lava Cave.

4. Hippogriff

Hippogriffs can be found in the Western side of Gadeus Grasslands.

There are 2 Gates near each other that spawn Hippogriffs:

  • The Westernmost gate spawns both Hippogriffs and Ducks
  • The other gate is a moving gate that spawns only Hippogriffs

5. Killer Griffin

The Killer Griffin is a special spawn that appears only during Starfall nights.

Killer Griffin Details
Location Central Northernmost area of Phoros Woodlands
Spawn Time 7:00 PM
Notable Drop Mealy Apple
An amazing upgrade material that reverses item stats (negative to positive, and vice versa)

Tip: It’s recommended to farm the Killer Griffin for Mealy Apples using your Spell Seal. Make sure you save before defeating the Killer Griffin because only one will spawn for that Starfall event.

Griffin Taming

There are a few things you should prepare before trying to tame Griffins.

Griffin Taming Checklist
Brush Farm Tool Using your brush on a wild monster brings out a musical note icon. Every time you brush that monster, it increases your chance to tame it (Max 15 times).
Monster Barn Vacancy A simple way to check vacancy is by using the brush. If no musical note appears the first time you brush a wild monster, that means your barns are full.
RP Restoring Items Griffins need 2 Spell Seal attempts for them to be trapped. This will consume a lot of RP, especially if you’re in need of a Griffin’s item drops for taming.
(Optional) Cheap Items for Taming You can bring along turnip seeds or anything inexpensive to use as alternative taming items.

Every Griffin type will drop its favorite taming items, which are:

  • Strong Talons
  • Bird’s Feathers

Note: Griffins don’t produce any items after being tamed.
