Steel sheets are made by combining iron ingots and carbon powder in the Smithy, where the material gets melted and hammered into shape by Stella.
Once made, these steel sheets are particularly useful in completing a number of ship upgrades and spirit requests.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what you need for this item:
|Smithy||Used to make steel sheet|
|Foundry||Used to make iron ingot|
|Crusher||Used to make carbon powder|
If you’re looking for a more detailed step-by-step, this guide will tell you everything you need to know from start to finish.
What You Need (Pre-Requisites)
As mentioned above, you need to make the steel sheets yourself by combining these two items:
- Iron Ingot
- Carbon Powder
That said, these two items can’t just be picked up from the map. You also need to make them yourself, and it can be a bit tricky.
So, to avoid any confusion, let’s tackle them one by one.
Step 1: Gathering the Iron Ingot
Iron ore is mined from nodes on islands, and you can find these specific nodes at:
- Hoseki Quarry (X: -138, Y: 28)
- Crow’s End Inc. (X: -126, Y: -51)
- Hidden Thicket (X: -42, Y: -91)
- Southpoint Docks (X 157, Y: 22)
Hoseki Quarry is the easiest location to visit out of these four. Additionally, it also has four nodes you can mine, while every other location only has one.
Note: If you have already unlocked the turtle sisters at this point, you can also “plant” iron ore in their shells to mine later.
Once you have mined the nodes, it’s time to build the Foundry. You would first need the Hobbyist blueprint upgrade from Albert’s Shipyard (X: 61, Y: 64), which requires:
- 2 Maple Logs
- 1 Limestone
- 400 Glims
Then, the Foundry itself requires:
- 20 Coals
- 20 Oak Planks
Once the foundry is built, head inside and interact with the machine to start the minigame.
While it may seem tricky at first, it’s easy once you understand it. Just place your iron ore in the compartment, place some coal in the furnace, and push on the bellows in an alternating fashion.
Do this while maintaining the temperature indicator within range, and you will see the temperature go up until it reaches the top, releasing iron ingots in the process.
Note: If you need a more detailed breakdown of this process, check out the Foundry Minigame section in our guide for how to get glass in Spiritfarer.
Step 2: Gathering Carbon Powder
Next up is the carbon powder, which requires two things:
Coal is easy enough to find, as it can be mined from the same places where you previously mined iron ore. Additionally, you can also find coal in floating crates.
Alternatively, if you already have a sawmill, then the sawdust you get every time you cut logs can be cooked in the kitchen to make coal.
As for the crusher, the building will be introduced to you by the spirits Bruce & Mickey after recruiting them onto the ship.
These two are found on Southpoint Docks (X: 157, Y: 22), which you need the Rock Destroyer boat upgrade to reach.
Purchased on Albert’s Shipyard, this upgrade requires:
- 10 Aluminum Ingots
- 8 Marbles
- 6 Fireglows
- 2 Spirit Flowers
- 1,700 Glims
Once you have the upgrade, proceed to Southpoint Docks and talk to the first spirit you find (with the red bull silhouette). They’ll ask you to “bully” another spirit, but all you need to do is talk to the next one you see.
Our guide in getting Bruce and Mickey goes more in-depth on this.
Once they’re on the boat, they’ll introduce you to the Crusher during their second request: “Smash! Smash!”.
You can build the crusher with these requirements:
- 15 Ash Planks
- 7 Pulsar Ingots
- 5 Zinc Ingots
Ash planks are made in the sawmill, while zinc ingots are made by smelting zinc ore.
Meanwhile, pulsar ingots are made from the pulsar ore that you’ll get from the Pulsar Rays event that Bruce and Mickey will introduce to you.
You can find the first location in the Oxbury Region at X: 156, Y: -15, marked by the pulsar ray logo.
The second location is in the same region at X: 219, Y: -95.
The event itself is pretty easy: just touch the rays of light that will go in every direction. Each ray that you touch will drop 1 pulsar ore, and you can process these in the foundry like any other ore.
After you’ve built the crusher, making carbon powder is quick and easy. Interact with the machine inside, place a good number of coal, and repeatedly press the action button to “crush” it and make carbon powder.
Making Steel Sheets
Now that you have both of the needed materials, it’s time to build the smithy.
This building requires the next blueprint upgrade: the master blueprint, which requires:
- 10 Silica Powder
- 10 Zinc Ingots
- 2,800 Glims
Silica powder is obtained by crushing quartz in the crusher, while zinc ingots are made in the foundry.
Note: Depending on where you are currently story-wise, Gustav the spirit will naturally introduce you to the smithy in one of his requests.
Once unlocked, building the smithy requires:
- 12 Silica Powder
- 5 Comet Powder
- 5 Pulsar Ingots
- 12 Ash Planks
Comet powder is made by crushing the comet rocks that you obtain through the meteor showers event. For additional information, you can read our guide on how to get comet rocks.
Once it’s built, head inside the smithy and choose the steel sheet from the available items. This will trigger the furnace timer, and how long it takes depends on the materials you chose.
The mini-game will start after, and all you need to do is hit the ball with your hammer until it flattens. Pause when the hammer turns red, and continue once it becomes yellow.
You should have steel sheets in no time!
Steel Sheet Usage
Once you have a good amount of steel sheets, you can use them for these upgrades:
