Let’s face it: there’s a little bit of a sweet tooth in all of us, isn’t there?
I mean, there’s so much variety between candy and desserts, it’s hard to settle on eating just the one thing sometimes.
But the characters I’m about to list off rarely pay any attention to the recommended guidelines on the back of their candy wrappers. They spend most of their screen time chowing down on cakes, candies, and all kinds of desserts.
So let’s take a look at some anime characters who always seem to have a treat in their hand, or a spoonful of cake in their mouth.
1. Usagi Tsukino
Anime: Sailor Moon
Our main girl Sailor moon loves (and I mean loves) her sweets.
Not being content with just candy, she’ll often be seen with other sweet treats, even at one point dual-wielding ice-cream cones.
You’ve got a spare hand for a reason so you might as well use it!
Some of this might stem from her child-like demeanor, given that for most of the series she is just that. However, even after a few seasons when she starts to shed her more naïve exterior, there’s always room for more ice cream.
And frankly I can’t blame her for one moment.
2. Kanato Sakamaki
Anime: Diabolik Lovers
Here’s another character whose attachment to candy stems from their childish personality.
Kanato can almost always be seen with two things – sweets being one, his beloved Teddy being the other.
Given that he’s a literal vampire, you’d have expected his tastes to be a little more savory in nature. Though I’ve never chomped on anyone’s neck to drink their blood, so maybe I’m the one in the wrong!
Kanato isn’t just limited to sweets, either – although cakes and desserts feature heavily in his diet. But he does seem to have a fondness for lollipops.
Is that an intentional finger point to him being a vampire? I’m going to assume yes.
3. Atsushi Murasakibara
Anime: Kuroko’s Basketball
Usually you wouldn’t see an athlete of any sort wolfing down the sort of food that Atsushi does. However, if you’re one of the star players of the Generation of Miracles, I’m guessing the Coach might let it slide.
His sweet tooth is so bad that it’s literally stated that Atsushi spends every penny he has on sweets and junk food.
Oh, to have the metabolism of a high-schooler again!
On the outside, he might seem slobbish and lacking the love of basketball that everyone else seems to have. But it’s clear that this giant superstar not only takes the game of basketball seriously, but also takes the candy section at the local supermarket just as seriously.
4. Xerxes Break
Anime: Pandora Hearts
When you see a character with a pocket full of sugar cubes to help counter their cravings for the sweet stuff, you know you’ve found a worthy candidate for this list.
Yes, Xerxes Break is 100% a sugar zombie. It feels like he needs to stuff to survive.
Every other scene he’s eating something sweet, or dipping a fork into one dessert or another.
The man is seriously in deep when it comes to treats.
When he isn’t making deals with demons or doing a whole bunch of murdering, you can be sure that Xerxes is going to be tucking in to something unhealthy.
5. Yachiru Kusajishi
This diminutive lieutenant of the 11th Division of the Soul Society is very childish in a lot ways.
Size, demeanor, personality, and of course, her total and overwhelming love of sweets.
Though it isn’t just sweets she eats – those are simply her favorite. But one of her pastimes is going from Soul Society meeting to meeting just to snaffle up the free refreshments on offer.
I’ve never related with a character quite so much before.
She even got in trouble for spending the funds she was supposed to be looking after as head of the Shinigami Woman Association… guess what she spent the money on.
One thing can be said for certain: that’s a sweet tooth that won’t quit!
6. Mitsukuni Haninozuka
Anime: Ouran High School Host Club
Let’s get this out of the way quickly: Mitsukuni, or Honey Senpai as he’s known, looks like he should follow the “is a child, so likes sweets formula”.
But no, this pint-sized character is eighteen years old.
A four foot tall eighteen year old who carries a stuffed rabbit and loves eating sweets and desserts. I just needed to get that out.
Though he’s much more clever and mature than you would guess by looking at him, the dessert thing definitely rings true – he says in one episode that he eats three entire cakes after dinner every single night.
Maybe it’s cakes that stunt your growth instead of cigarettes?
7. Nagisa Hazuki
Here’s some more proof now that even the most athletic anime characters have a sweet tooth.
I mean, being a swimmer means being in top physical shape.
However that doesn’t stop Nagisa from chowing down on sweet bread, ice cream, strawberry shortcake, strawberry cake… if it’s sweet, he’ll eat it.
It feels fitting that there’s even a section on his character wiki that mentions how despite all the junk food he eats, he still gains muscle tone.
Either I need to take up swimming, or I need to be eighteen years old again.
No, I won’t cut down on the junk food, how dare you!
Anime: Death Note
Possibly the most famous sweet-lover on the list.
L might have kept several small cake makers in business during his time in the Death Note series.
It’s not just cakes, either.
He’s not fussy when it comes to sweets, notably filling his tea with enough sugar to keep an ant colony going for about a thousand years.
In fact, even the people who were close to him picked up the habit – Mello is always munching on a chocolate bar as he works.
Though I guess “close” is a very subjective term when it comes to characters like Mello. So is “works”, too, now I think about it.
9. Gintoki Satama
Before a big battle, most people would likely eat light – got to stay spray on your feet, you know?
Gintoki isn’t like that.
If he could chug a gallon of strawberry milkshake before every swing of his sword without getting cut to pieces he probably would. Such is his love for all things sweet.
Though it isn’t limited to liquid luxuries – chocolate cakes, and parfaits particularly, seem to motivate him just as much.
The other characters around him have pointed out his many vices time and time again – gambling and drinking are just two of the others.
But Gintoki is, well, Gintoki. And a little criticism isn’t going to stop him from getting at the strawberry milk again, is it?
10. Misaki Shima
Anime: Futaba-kun Change!
Have you ever liked sweets so much that the people around you started tasting sweet things whenever they got too close?
While Misaki Shima might not have quite turned the air to syrup, her love of sweet things does seem to have affected her cooking somehow – making everything she whips up absolutely, indelibly sweet to everyone but her.
In fact, the joke even extends to the people in her swimming club, with the gist being that all the other swimmers only know how to swim in sugar water now that she’s been in the pool with them.
They say you can like sweets too much for your own good. But I don’t think anyone meant it like this.
Anime: Cardcaptor Sakura
We’ve had plenty of kids on this list who know their way around the cookie jar.
It’s time to jump to the other end of the scale with a being that’s hundreds of years old and still loves their treats.
Cerberus, or Kerberos, or Kero-chan, or Kero as he’s commonly known, has even allowed candy to distract him from helping Sakura capture the cards she inadvertently let loose.
In fact, it’s telling as to just how much he loves sugar that he uses sunlight to gain energy – he doesn’t even need the food to keep him going. It’s all for the love of eating it!
That’s how to live in style as an ancient being, that’s for sure.
Anime: Mirmo de Pon
This entry could be considered cheating, given the race of beings that Rima belongs to (the Muglox) all adore eating sweet things.
But it’s Rima’s choice of sweet treat that gets her the nod over the rest of the adorable fairies.
Cream puffs might be about the sweetest thing on the planet – basically wet sugar inside dry sugar.
And while the other fairies are satiated by more mundane candy, Rima has gone all out and enjoys the treat to end all treats.
I mean, they have to be tastier than whatever awful looking thing she cooks herself.
