Prayer is easily one of the most important skills in the game.
It provides a variety of useful effects, including the coveted overhead protection prayers.
And in OSRS, prayer is primary trained with bones. As a result, the price of bones is exceptionally high.
This is due to the popularity and importance of the skill in PvM.
Without prayer, many of the OSRS bosses and quests would not be possible! So let’s take a look at the most popular ways of training prayer to get you leveling up a bit faster.
5. Power Burying (F2P)
Starting off our list is the best F2P method of getting your prayer up: power burying.
As a non-member you’re unfortunately locked to bones and big bones.
Both provide rather small amounts of experience.
So the best way to get your prayer up quickly in F2P is to buy a ton of Big Bones off of the Grand Exchange, stand next to a bank, and fill your inventory – with the goal of power burying every single bone.
This method is very click intensive and low experience.
Prayer training is brutal in F2P, but if you want to make steady gains this is the only way.
To save a bit of money you could always slay your own Hill Giants and collect the bones yourself – but this will take much longer.
4. Bonecrusher
The Bonecrusher is a great utility item which you can unlock after completing the Morytania Hard Diary.
This is an item you can carry in your inventory that’ll automatically bury any bones dropped by enemies, and provide half the normal prayer experience you’d normally get.
But this item really starts to shine once you complete the Morytania Elite Diary.
Then it’ll provide the full experience you would normally get!
So the best way to utilize this item is by simply having it on your person whenever you’re training slayer or casual PvM. This works especially well it’s in the Catacombs of Kourend – because when you bury bones, prayer is restored, adding this passive effect during combat is very useful.
To charge this item you need to use ecto-tokens on it, obtainable from the Ectofuntus.
Various monsters will on occasion drop an ensouled head, such as Elves, Greater Demons, and Dragons.
These heads can be taken to the Dark Altar on Zeah, near where the Dense Essence mines are, and used to summon a much weaker version of the monster the head represents.
Defeating it will yield some decent prayer experience.
These heads come with some pros and cons.
On the plus side, this is a middle ground in affordability, as ensouled heads are cheaper to afford than traditional bone training methods.
On the cons side, the heads can only be used by the Dark Altar, are slower than traditional bone methods, and require combat.
Ultimately, it’s a matter of how much you want to spend. If your budget is tight then ensouled heads are probably the best choice for you.
2. Ectofuntus
The Ectofuntus provides the most prayer experience if we measure experience per bone.
But the method is seldom used now, as it’s rather tedious and time consuming.
The only people using this method to grind prayer are those who have very tight budgets, and those gaining ecto-tockens.
It’s also locked behind the Ghost Ahoy quest.
The Ectofuntus grants roughly four times the experience you would normally get from burying a bone, making this a very high experience method.
If you do want to go this route then I would recommend obtaining level 58 agility to use the shortcut within, making use of the Ectophial for quick teleports, and having a one-click teleport to get to a bank to resupply after each trip.
1. Gilded Altar/Chaos Altar
The Gilded and Chaos altars are the most used and best ways to get to level 99 prayer in no time at all.
Gilded altars are found in people’s player owned houses. They require level 75 construction to make.
However, you can always make use of another player’s gilded altar if you don’t own one.
With both burners lit, the gilded altar provides a whopping 350% bonus in experience per bone, putting it just below the Ectofuntus in experience.
However, these altars are much more accessible and AFK than the Ectofuntus.
The Chaos Altar works in the exact same way as a gilded altar – but has a 50% chance to not use a bone.
This method is risker and slower, as the chaos altar is in the wilderness and not by a bank – making trips slightly more difficult than using a gilded altar.
But it comes with the benefit of saving more bones and getting more experience long-term.
So what should you do?
I recommend the Gilded altar to those with money to burn and hardcore ironmen who should not go into the wilderness.
The Chaos altar should be used more by normal ironmen and those on a budget.
